XL3 are divided into four ranges according to the maximum current-carrying capacity: XL3 160, XL3 400, XL3 800 and XL3 4000. each one is available in a wide range of sizes and versions (insulated, metal, iP 30, iP 55). They can take forms 2a to 4b level separation devices to meet requirements for continuity of service and safe maintenance. The standard for certification of assemblies that has been applied for many years, and is still applicable, is ieC 60439-1. The procedure for certification of assemblies is described in this book in accordance with this standard. A new standard, ieC 61439-1, issued by the ieC in 2009, is to replace it over the next few years. it will not make any fundamental changes to the philosophy of the approach to certification. it will allow verification of compliance with requirements to be carried out by other means, such as inspection, calculation, analogy or simulation.
